1" Tile

Inspection

Open and inspect each carton of tile to confirm shading consistency.  The end user is responsible for determining the acceptability of the product. Due to the 1" Series’ artistic nature and handmade character, variations in shade, color, tone, and size within each sheet of tile should be expected.

Installation Instructions:

Randomly select 5 sheets from different cartons to establish color control during installation. Before installing tile, blend sheets from different cartons to assure random placement during installation. As sheets are being installed, check them against control samples prior to placing them in the setting material to assure acceptable shade variations and quality. Installation constitutes acceptance.

Important! Please note!  Install 1" Series with the paper side up.

With a 1/4”x1/4” square-notched trowel, firmly apply a liberal amount of setting material into the substrate.  Using the flat side of the trowel, flatten the notches in the setting material to create a smooth, consistent setting bed approximately 1/8” thick.

With an even pressure, apply 1" sheets with paper side up (facing you).  Using a wooden block (a 2x6 works well) and hammer, lightly rap in the tile to create a flat surface.  To avoid sheet patterns, carefully align the grout joints of each sheet as it is installed. Apply only as much setting material as can be covered within 10 to 15 minutes or until surface is still wet and tacky. Allow tile to set until firm, approximately 20 to 40 minutes, before paper removal.

To remove, apply a moderately wet sponge to the paper, allowing the water to soak through and dissolve the glue. (Warm water dissolves quicker than cold). Starting at the corners, peel the paper from the tile. Paper should be removed as the work progresses. Make any tile alignment adjustments while the setting material is still fresh.

Grouting may be done after tile is firmly set, approximately 24 hours after setting.  Clean tile of residual paper and glue from the tile and wipe clean with a damp sponge.  Apply grout (sanded grout is recommended) with a rubber float making sure that grout joints are completely full.  Allow grout to set up and clean surface with a wet sponge.  Final cleaning of grout haze and tile polishing is done with a clean, dry cheese cloth.

These instructions are provided as a general guideline to cover most applications. See Tile Council of America (TCA) Handbook for Ceramic Tile for additional installation information. www.tileusa.com

Setting materials:

Due to the translucent nature of glass, the color choice of the bonding material will impact the ultimate look of the tile. We recommend the use of white bonding mortar from one of the suppliers listed below. Adhere to manufacturer’s recommended cure times for all setting materials.

A 21-day minimum cure time after grouting is required before the installation can be submerged or exposed to heavy water use. Installing 1" Series tile products requires thin-set mortar mixed with a liquid latex admixture. The following setting materials are recommended for the installation of the 1" Series tile. These products have proven successful in testing.

Custom Building Products: Master Blend or Premium Plus Thin-Set Mortar mixed with Custom-Flex Ultra-Strength Thin-Set Additive  or,

Custom Building Products: Universal Tile Setting Adhesive mixed with Acrylic Mortar Admix.

Laticrete: 211 Crete Filler Powder mixed with Laticrete 4237 Latex Thin-Set Mortar Additive  or,

Laticrete: (Dry, interior--- applications only) 317 Thin-Set Powder mixed with Laticrete 333 add-mix.
